It looks as if what we were referring to facetiously not long ago lias become grim reality. Somebody is prepared to fight to the last Chinaman in Korea. that tower and its parapet.

Apparently somebody rang up somebody else and said that somebody was walking round the outermost and uppermost parapet of the Durle Hill Memorial Tower. It was like a message being received that gangsters were robbing the Bank of New Zealand! People moved fast, but apparently the culprit get away! We recall such another incident, and people "moved fast’* on that, occasion, too. It was when a unit of the American fleet visited New Zealand and Wanganui entertained the sailors of Uncle Sam lor a day and a night. The Durie Hill tower was one of the sites visited, and, with seafaring nonchalance, three or four of the lads walked round the outer parapet. Those watching down below gasped, and then sat down suddenly, embracing the safety of mother earth as they watched the “parapeteers” stepping casually round and round. Now, somebody wants to know if there is a by-law to prevent such a diriy deed. If there isn’t we suggest we circularise the candidates standing for the City Council: "Are you in favour of framing a by-law to protect the parapet of the Durie Hill Memorial Tower?’’ If they answer "no,” or hedge, vote against them!
