GANTREE SELECTED FOR N.Z. TROTTING CUP TODAY

■ With the Inter-Dominion Champion- | ships set down to be held at Adding- | ton next February, keen interest will be displayed in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, to be decided at that course today, when the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club will open its three-day spring carnival. Thirteen pacers are carded for this £7500 race, and the issue appears more open than in the days when Indianapolis and, later, Highland Fling dominated the scene to such effect that, the former won three Cups and Highland Fling two. The indications are that Chamfer, Attack, Gantree, Gough's Pride and Checkmate will carry a good deal of support, and Single Direct, who is under orders for Perth, may be in the picture if the front-markers do not make the pace too torrid. The totalisator double will be on the Canterbury larndicap and the Empire Handicap, and likely prospects include:— Introductory Handicap: Hall Ace, Walnut Hall, Springbok. Spring Handicap: Highland Kilt, Lillian Mac, Gay Belwin. Riccarton Stakes: Vivanti, Johnny Globe, Irish Orator. N.Z. Trotting Cup: Gantree, Chamfer, Attack. Canterbury Handicap: Young Charles, Culture, Awadale. Sockburn Sprint: Ripcord, Acclamation, Tatsydale. Empire Handicap: Parawa Derby, Trustee, Bonny Scott.
