Owing to boisterous weather conditions there was not a large attendance at the October Flower Show meeting. Mrs Glasgow gave the motto “When skys are blue and days are bright a kitchen garden is my delight.” Business was quickly dealt with, and the guest speaker, Mr Thomas of the Department of Agriculture was introduced. His talk on the kitchen garden was most helpful to all. Mrs Power moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Thomas. Competitions were: Lettuce, Mrs Hucker 1, Mrs Morgan 2, Miss Flyger 3. Best bloom, Mrs Morgan 1, Miss Flyger and Mrs Hucker, equal 2; Mrs Howie 3. Jam of plums, Mrs Rowan 1, Mrs Downey 2, Mrs Evans 3. Results of flower show: Modern arrangements, Mrs Morgan 1, Mrs Bruce 2 and 3. Vase of flowers, Mrs Morgan 1, Mrs Christie 2, Mrs Speer 3. Floral spray, Mrs Christie, Mrs Rowan 2, Mrs Glasgow 3. One rose, Mrs Speer 1, Mrs Morgan 2. 3 anemones, Miss Flyger 1, Mrs Evans 2. 3 ranunculi, Mrs Hucker 1 and 3, Miss Barnes 2. 3 Iceland poppies, Mrs Rowan 1, Miss Flyger 2, Mrs Randall 3. Soup plate of floating flowers, Mrs Hucker 1, Mrs Morgan 2, Mrs Christie 3. 3 flowering shrubs, Mrs Howie 1, Mrs Rowan 2, Mrs Lee 3. Kaitoke The November meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, Mrs Shanks presiding. Mrs Prichard gave the report on the recent council meeting. The guest speaker, Mrs Farley, gave a comprehensive talk on her visit to Norfolk Island. It was decided taht members should exchange gifts at the Christmas meeting next month. The bring and buy stall in charge of Mrs Higgins and helpers was very successful. Three members received gifts from the birthday box. Competitions results were as follows: Child’s toy, Mrs Garner 1, Mrs Gillies 2, Mrs Prichard 3. Best bloom, Mrs Shanks 1, Mrs Scott jn. 2. Mrs Hunt and Mrs Palmer, equal 3. Spring cabbage, Mrs McKernan 1.
