President's Warning Hard Fighting For The United Nations Still Lies Ahead In Korea

NEW YORK, Nov. 4 (Ree. 6 pm).—President Truman tonight warned that “hard fighting still lies ahead” in Korea despite the military victories of the United Nations forces. He described the United States leadership in the action to stamp out Communist aggression as “the greatest step toward world peace that has been made in my lifetime. ’ ’ , The President was making his one major radio television election campaign speech before voting takes place next Tuesday

President Truman launched a bitter attack on Republican isolationists. They had dragged American foreign policy into politics, said Mr Truman. A vote for the Republicans Would be a vote for national suicide. United States was now on the right road to peace through co-operation between the tree nations. “In 1920, we took the wrong road—the road away from peace. That was when isolationists kept us out of the League of Nations. Since I became President in 1945, 1

have worked constantly for world peace. That is my greatest ambition, and, with God's help, I think we are making progress toward that goal."

"Even though some hard fighting still lies ahead, our forces have already won a tremendous military victory in Korea, but they have done ft great deal more than that. They have brought about a moral and spiritual revival among all men who seek freedom and peace. By their sacrifice, they have brought new life and strength to the United Nations. I believe with all my heart that in this year of 1950 our nation has taken the road the Lord meant us to take 30 years ago."

Mr Truman said the isolationists wanted the United States to retire into its shell, and abandon friends and allies. "Such a course would be an open invitation for Communist imperialism to gobble up the rest of the world. If that should happen, the United States would be left alone face threat of Communist aggression. The forces of Communism would have the manpower resources of all Europe, Asia and Africa to use against us. This is the time to stand up and let the whole world know we are going to stick with the other free nations in the struggle against Communism."

Mr Truman promised the Democrats would go ahead with the fair deal programme, “American people will continue to move toward—might force toward peace and happiness. No little group of special interests or selfish politicians is going to be able to stop us.”
