HIGH SCHOOL, OLD BOYS AND HUNTERVILLE GAIN OUTRIGHT VICTORIES

MARTON, Last Night (O.C.).—The defeat of Marton by High School provided a major surprise when the first series of club cricket matches were concluded in Rangitikei yesterday afternoon. High School were 55 runs behind in the first innings, but due mainly to a fine recovery in the second knock, in which the former New Zealand opening batsman, R. de R. Worker, played a leading role with 62, plus the fine bowiing effort of the colt, Marks (six for 25), who skittled Marton in the second innings for 49, the school team won by 67 runs. Porewa, could not overhaul Hunterville’s big tally and were defeated , by an innings, while Old Boys, who appeared to be in a losing position at the end of the first day’s play, fought back tenaciously, and succeeded in dismissing the last Suburbs’ batsman in the second to last over of the day to win outright. Stump scores at the end of the second day Were:— Hunterville 278 defeated Porewa 84 and 70 by an innings and 124 runs. High School 44 and 171 defeated Marton 99 and 49 by 67 runs.
