ST. JOHN AMBULANCE OFFICER DIES AFTER LEVEL CROSSING SMASH

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (P.A.).—Two persons were injured, one fatally, yesterday afternoon when the car in which they were travelling was struck by the 1.20 p.m. RangioraChristchurch train on the High Street level crossing at Rangiora. They were: Mrs Ida Eileen Hawkins, of Seddon Street Rangiora, who received facial injuries and severe shock and who died late yesterday afternoon; and William Charles Chambers, of White Street, Rangiora, who suffered injuries to his chest. Mr Chambers is district superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Mrs Hawkin's the Lady Superintendent of the nursing division. They were on their way to Kaikoura for an inspection of the division there in the evening. The car was a heavy sedan and was travelling towards Woodend when the train caught It and carried it across the cattle stops. The car was extensively damaged.
