Stratford Racing Club Stages Popular Taranaki Fixture

Though Taranaki stables, as might be expected, claim llie strongest representation at the Stratford Racing Club’s spring meeting today, there is a good sprinkling of visitors throughout the eight events carded.

The Stratford course, with a | long straight, slightly uphill to-1 ward the winning post, affords aj good test cf stamina, and many speedsters have in the past been found wanting over the final stages. Principal event today is the Stratford Handicap, the sixth race of the day and the second “leg” of the totalisator double, the first being the ninefurlong Budge Memorial Hack Handicap. Sixteen are engaged in the Stratford Handicap, and they are headed by Mercian Lad and Master McGrath, on the 8.4 mark. Mercian Lad shared first place with Ngarobi in the Marton Handicap at the spring meeting of the Marton Jockey Club, and his sustained run on that occasion would appeal as a likely pointer for his chances at Stratford. Master McGrath built up a good record last season, scoring five wins and having eight other placings. He was recently runner-up to Imperial at Otaki after having won at New Plymouth in August. Battle Strife won this race last year at long odds, and already this season he has been placed at Wanganui and Marton and ran a good race over eleven furlongs at Masterton. He should be near the peak of his form today. Chung Chong is the veteran of the field, but last season he won the Stratford Cup and the Malone Memorial double, and on the score of “horses for courses" he will have many friends. Another to whom the axiom applies is Red Ruler, last year’s Budge Memorial winner at Stratford. Red Ruler showed his class by winning the Higgle Handicap at Wanganui, and his third in the Waverley Cup recently suggests that he will have to be reckoned with. Mission is the logical favourite following his sterling display in winning the Waverley Cup. Prior to that he had run a good race against much stronger company in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham, over a mile and a-half. Mission has shown steady improvement since resuming, and he looks like taking a lot of beating today. Kia Ora Katoa was finishing on solidly in the Waverley Cup, and too much notice need not be taken of I Leighdine’s failure in that event as she did not get the best of passages. It would surprise if the winner came from lower down in the list, though Lord Kenneth is capable of running on solidly.. However, Mission, Red Ruler and Master McGrath make most appeal. If Fighting Fox runs up to his best Trentham form he will take a lot of beating in the Budge Memorial Hack, but Strathconan, who won at Waverley, and Jangada, who appears back to hie best, may prove troublesome. The six-furlong Stewart Handicap, the open sprint, will find a useful field of sprinters lining up. Silver Sam won well at Waverley, but he is likely to be well held by General Rule, Mallow and Consulate. Useful fields are engaged in the supporting events, and likely placegetters include:— Spring Hurdles.—Broiesome, Foveran, Tory. Lowgarth Trial.—First Division: Brabazon, Miss Robin. Second Division: Reremai, Fox Plato.

Pembroke Trial. —Coppelia, Two Grand, Admiral’s Pay. Budge Memorial Hack.—Fighting Fox, Strathconan, Ja’ gada. Mahoe Hack Handicap.—Nawadaha, Cool Waters, Eulogette. Stratford Handicap.—Mission, Red Ruler, Master McGrath. Stewart Handicap.—General Rule, Consulate, Mallow. Robson Hack Handicap.—Corella, Forest Tor, Flotilla. The acceptors are:— 11.2
