Alison Cup Is Feature Event Today At Ellerslie

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special), i —Big fields will be competing at the Auckland fixture at Ellerslie tomorrow. The ground will be easy after | rain through the week. There may be divisions in three races as several further scratchings are necessary if these are to be avoided. The Alison Cup, the main contest, bears a very open appearance. That good horse Balmacara will be making, his reappearance over a middle distance. His two efforts so far have been over a mile and he is now well forward. Cowper, a winner of two handicaps recently, will also be in demand. Wonder Boy, Stanfred and Reparation, who finished in reverse order here last month with a mere head separating them, will again be playing a conspicuous part. Kaitawa is improving last. Sleepy Duke, an easy winner at Cambridge, will be an acquisition to the handicap ranks and might score shortly. Patuone has come on nicely of late weeks and he will be ready for a real test now. Other lightweights not lacking support will be Prince Rana, Fifth Note, Kilfenora, Beau Pari, Fireman (he should have won a double at Whangarei), and probably Lone Star and Thinker, two staying hacks. It is a difficult problem, with Reparation likely to go another fine race. The field for the Cheltenham Handicap is easily the best brought together in the province for many a day and is probably superior to that contesting the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. Gold Script, Rizzio, Super Vaals, Gold Pal, Good Century and Correspond are good enough to hold their own in any sprint company. Dixie, Level Best and the promising three-year-olds Classowa and Barnsdale help to make up a magnificent field. It is not quantity so much as quality that marks this event. The filly Correspond might have Good Century to shake off at the finish. Horses favoured for their engagements are:—

Melrose Hack Handicap.—First division: Sierra, Penfriend. Second division: Hidden Treasure, Silver Robin. Milford Hack Handicap. —Rhett Butler, Gay Revel, Reliance. Tiri Hurdles. —Scotch Meadow, Revolte, Peerage. Alison Cup—Reparation, Prince Rana, Stanfred. Cambria Handicap.—First division: Brown Prince, Boussac. Second division: Busiris, Taj Mahal. Takapuna Hack Handicap—First division: Tamaki, Melody. Second division: Timsah, Balham. Cheltenham Handicap.—Good Century, Correspond, Gola Pal. Ponui Handicap.—Coonbridge, Loder, Star Fox.
