The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Edward John Gifford, acting-Secretary for Justice and act-ing-Controller General of Prisons. Mr Gifford was aged 63. He joined the Public Service from Nelson College as a cadet in the Internal Affairs De partment in 1915, transferring to the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, in 1916. After holding various positions, he was appointed inspector in 1933, and last year was appointed assist a inUnder Secretary to the Justice Department and on Mr Barnett’s going overseas was appointed acting-Per-manent Head of the department.
