WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA) Before the House of Representatives rose today for the week-end the Prime Minister (Mr. Holland) paid a tribute to the acting Speaker, Mr. Harker, who will relinquish his position on the return of the Speaker, Mr. Oram, to the House on Tuesday. Mr. Holland said he appreciated very much Mr. Harker’s control of the House, referring also to the acting chairman of committees, Mr. Sutherland. The Prime Minister said he would not be letting the cat out of the bag if he told the House that before Mr. Sutherland took over from Mr. Harker he had approached him and asked whether he was as familiar with the Standing Orders of the House as some Opposition members were. ‘”*Oh, yes; I’ve had a look at them but I've got a set of my own,’ was the I reply from Mr. Sutherland,” said the

Prime Minister, amid loud cries of "Hear, hear!” and laughter. Mr. F. Jones (Opp., St. Kilda): They were very good rules. Mr. Carr (Opp., Timaru): I movfc that they be printed. Mr. Holland complimented Mr. Sutherland on his work and said that the House had greatly enjoyed the experience of his being chairman of committees. The Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Nash), also paid a tribute to Mr. Harker, and when referring to Mr Sutherland, said, “I believe he is unique in every possible way. I could not imagine anyone who was determined to be more square and straight. He has a personality far above the normal.” Mr. Harker, acknowledging the tributes paid to him, thanked the members of the House for their cooperation, and Mr. Sutherland said his experience had been a very fine one, and although he had heard it said that he had a set of rules all of his own. they appeared to have worked all right. (Laughter). The House rose at 5.58 p.m. and when it resumes at 2.30 p.m. next Tuesday, will deal with the remaining classes of estimates and proceed to dispose of the business on the Order paper, comprising about 20 Bills.
