SANDY'S CORNER
WE LL DO THE SAME. We all have one thing in common with George Bernard Shaw. We are all mortal! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK. All successful individuals have become such by hard work; by improving moments before they pass into hours, and hours that other people may occupy in the purspit of pleasure. —Mary Baker Eddy. THE “MAINLAND?” Dear “Sandy,”—ln today’s paper you ask where is this South Island Mr Helliwell speaks of. Your lack of knowledge is excusable as this name is obsolete. The modern term is the Mainland of New Zealand and as such I feel you know it. However, for your information I mention marks of superiority of the mainland over the North Island: The Southerland Falls (the highest in the world); the Pupu Springs, Golden Bay (the largest in the world. 700,000,600 gallons in 24 hours). Apart from this we have fiords, lakes and glaciers of much beauty and the notornis. Admittedly, w,e have no hot springs, but we don’t want them, as we keep warm by working. Products of note are: Hops, spuds and Hokonui whisky. I realise the north can make a few small claims, such as Wanganui being an educational centre, but what is such education when residents within five miles of the town don’t oven know what electricity is? Further information gladly given by jour» faithfully, G. A. VAVASOUR. Okoia, Nov. 2, 1950.
