Ski-ing Hazards The large quantities of broker bottles and empty tins found near the Salt Hut is causing much concern tc the Tongariro National Park Board. The warden (Mr T. Shout) reported to the board that tins, bottles, cartons and other litter created a condition that was unwholesome. A member stated that clubs must accept a portion of the responsibility for the conditions, as he had seen bottles on the ski-ing grounds at the head of the glacier. It was decided to provide more bins for rubbish, to erect notices for the benefit of visitors and to generally try to educate people to be tidier. It was staed that when the snow was becoming light the bottles and tins were a hazard to people who fell in the snow. National Park Tussock Land. The chairman said the property could revert to Crown Lands and Mr. Little’s application could be dealt with by that department. Titles Secondary While efforts should be made to improve the standard of competitive swimming in Wanganui, the principal responsibility of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association —the promotion and encouragement of the knowledge of swimming and lifesaving—should not be lost sight of, stated the review of the year’s activities tabled at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Swimming Centre last night. “The main operation is the encouragement of as many people as possible to learn to swim—not just across the pool, but proficiently—so that they may keep themselves safe from possible drowning and also be able to assist others less proficient. The vast amount of work which lies ahead is a challenge to all connected with the sport and one which we should readily accept,’ the report stated.
