Mr W G Miller, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland, retires on March 31. His successor will be Mr. C. C. Haswell.

Dr. T. H. Pettit was elected a life member at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association at Christchurch yesterday. Mr. F. E. Bolton (Nelson) was elected president al the annual meeting oi the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association yesterday. Messrs. J. D. Hassal (Wellington) and E. R. Cook (Nelson) are the vice-presidents.

Mr. J. A. McPherson, director of parks and reserves at Auckland, has left for a visit to Australia, where he will inspect playing fields, botanical gardens and horticultural establishments.

Mr. Spencer Gray Scoular, city engineer at Dunedin since 1939, has died at the age of 54 years after a long illness. He had been in the service of the Otago City Council since 1921. He served both in World War I and World War 11.

Mr. C. A. Bramich, Minister of Housing and Building Supplies in Tasmania, arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Wanganella for a month’s visit. He is accompanied by his wife and her 88-year-old father, Mr. Frank Conway.

A resident of Hawera for 77 of his 8G years, Mr James Dodds Syme died at his home on Saturday. He was one of the foundation members of the Hawera Borough Club and one of the foundation pupils of the Hawera school which was built by his father in 1875.

Mr. J. B. Brownlee has been appointed manager of the Embassy Theatre. For two months manager of the Wanganui Opera House, Mr. Brownlee has been employed by Amalgamated Theatres Ltd. for 20 years. Immediately before coming to Wanganui he was manager of the State ’Theatre, Hastings.
