Petition For Poll On Rating System In Rangitikei County

MARTON, Last Night (SR).—Unless the petition urging the Rangitikei County Council to take a poll of ratepayers on the question of substituting rating on unimproved valuations instead of capital valuations, as at present, was received by the council next Friday, October 13, it would be too late for a poll to be taken in conjunction with the local body elections in November, said the county clerk, Mr F. L. Nicol, at the monthly meeting today. Mr Nicol said that the petition was now being signed, but before the council could act on it the petition must contain the signatures of 15 per cent of the ratepayers in the county. The regulations also stipulated that •the petition must bo received within a specified time before the poll was taken. ThL period expires next Friday i! the poll on the rating question was to be taken on November 18, otherwise tne council would be put to considerable expense in conducting a separate poll at a later date.
