OBITUARY

Mrs. Katherine Newton Mrs. Katherine Newton, wife of Mr. I. E. Newton, of 9 St. Leonards Road. St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, passed away on Saturday morning. Mrs. Newton had been a patient at Braemar Hospital for several weeks prior to her death. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Pike, of Christchurch, Mrs. Newton spent her early life and also the early years of her married life in that city. When Mr. Newton was appointed principal of the Napier Technical College in 1917, Mrs. Newton became a prominent member of that community, particularly so as a member of the Ladies’ Methodist Guild. Removing to Wanganui in 1922, when Mr. Newton became principal of the Wanganui Technical College, Mrs. Newton, in conjunction with her husband, took over the management of that institution’s boarding establishment and soon became renowned for the care which she bestowed upon her young charges, especially when they were indisposed. She became a member of Trinity Ladies’ Guild and was for some time its treasurer. She was also an active vice-president of the Girl Guides' Association, relinquishing this office only when compelled to do so by ill health. For many years she was a member of the Wanganui Croquet Club and of the Garden Circle of the Aramoho Institute and also of the Victoria League. Mrs. Newton was a very hospitable hostess. Both at her home in Wanganui and at the Taupo Cottage she gathered around her a wide circle of friends. Old boys and girls of the college constantlv dropped into the Newton home, while the members of thn musical circles of the country always gravitated there. Mrs. Newton is survived by her husband. who is living in retirement: one son. Warwick, civil engineer of Greymouth, and Miss Elaine .Newton historian, musician and active politician. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from Trinity Church.
