Woollen Mill’s Win Semi-final For The Wenham Cup Competition

In the semi-final of the Wanganui Indoor Bowls for the Wenham Cup competition Wanganui Woollen Mills team (Miss F. Marshall, Miss K. O’Connor, Mrs. N. Dennison and Mrs M. Dempster skip) defeated the P. and T. team (L. Trussell, W. Beaumont, J. Hool (substituting for T. Mulcahy and R. Ogg skip) 22-14. This was the first loss for the P. and T. team which had retained both their lives.

The match was played on the Cosmopolitan Club green and there was a good attendance of bowlers who witnessed a keenly contested game result, ing in some excelleht heads. On the night, the ladies played the most consistent games and this Was helped in no small measure by the excellent leading of Miss Marshall. P. and T. were first to score when Mrs Dempster who was up on the head carried the jack across the line for three down. The next head went to P. and T. who scored a three. However, on the third head, Mrs. Dempster played a nice shot to go from two down to three up. The ladies were four Up on the next end and the opposing' number three in endeavouring to open the head caught the jack and •‘killed’’ it for two down. The sixth end saw the Woollen Mills team draw level with a single to make the score 6 all.

From the sixth head to the fifteenth the play was very even with the score in favour of Mrs Dempster 14-11. Continuing to play good bowls the ladies increased their score and on the 20th. end led 21-13. They ‘’killed’’ the head on the 21st. for the loss of one and on the reply notched a single to Win 22-14. Singles semi-final: M.U. (Austin) 20 V Brunswick (Kirk) 19; Railways (Gray) 16 v Cosmopolitan (McCracken) &. Pairs semi-final: M.U. (Cartwright and Austin) 20 v Cosmopolitan (McDonald and McCracken) 18. P. and T. (Mulcahy and Burbush) 22 v Woollen Mills (Hansen and Dempster) 19. The final of the champion of champion singles will be decided on Wednesday night on the Cosmopolitan green at 6.45 p.m. when M.U. (Austin) and Railway (Gray) will play off. This match will be followed by the Wenham Cup finalists P. and T. (Ogg) and Woollen'Mills (Mrs Dempster). On Thursday night at 7.30 the cham. pion pairs finalists M.U. (Cartwright and Austin) will meet P. and T. Mulcahy and Burbush). Arrangements have been made for the final night to be held in the Savage Club hall on Thursday, September 21, when the presentation of prizes to the various competition winners will be made. Matches on this evening will be made on the Ponsonby draw and three games will be played, commencing at 7.15 p.m.
