Allowance For Rationing Of Prisoners Held By Police

PARLIAMENT BLDGS, Sept. 7 (P.A).—ln the House of Representatives to-day, Mr. McCombs (Opp., Lyttelton) gave notice to ask the Minister in Charge of Police if he would raise the allowance paid for the rationing of prisoners held temporarily in custody by the police. In a note to the question Mr McCombs said the recent rise in 'the cost of foodstuffs meant that the present allowance of 5s per diem was insufficient to provide materials for meals. In many cases, especially in the smaller towns, the food was provided by the policeman’s wife, and she was having to supplement the food from her household supplies and was receiving nothing for her services in preparing meals.
