TRAFFIC TALLIES TAKEN ON BUSY COUNTY ROADS

Traffic tallies taken at three checking points on Wanganui county roads showed that the Warrengate to Kauangaroa Road carried the heaviest traffic over the seven-day period of the check. In that time 1481 vehicles passed over the road, while from Wanganui to Warrengate 1460 were recorded and on the Warrengate Road only 573.

This information was given at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council yesterday when an analysis of the traffic tallies was presented by the county clerk, Mr. S. L. Orr.

The average number of vehicles a day passing over the WarrefigateKauangaroa Road was 211, he reported. The checks were taken over 16 hours each day. Of the total for the week, 989 were cars, 423 were trucks, 18 were passenger vehicles and 51 were motor-cycles. One hundred and fifty-four bicycles, 30 head' of cattle and four horses had also been recorded. One thousand and fifteen cars had passed over the Wanganui-Warren-gate Road in the same period, together with 365 trucks, 18 passenger vehicles and 62 motor-cycles. The daily average was 208 vehicles. On this road 126 bicycles. 63 head of cattle and four horses had also been recorded. On the Warrengate Road. 369 cars, 186 trucks, lour passenger vehicles and 14 motor-cycles had been recorded to give a daily average of 82 vehicles. Here 49 bicycles had been counted and 77 head of cattle and six horses. The peak day for car traffic on all the roads was Sunday. Then 191 cars had been checked on the \Van-ganui-Warrengate Road, 187 on the Warrengate-Kauangaroa Road, and 101 on the Warrengate Road. Thursday had also been a busy day on the Wanganui-Warrengate Road, 177 cars being counted. Giving a more comprehensive analysis of the truck traffic on the three roads, Mr. Orr said that of the total truck traff.c on the WanganuiWarrengate Road. 154 trucks were under two tons, 77 between two and five tons, 68 between five and seven tons, 60 between seven and 10 tons, one over 10 tons and five multi-axled. The counts for similar divisions of truck traffic on the Warrengate-Kau-angaroa Road were 168, 112, 66. 69. 2 and 6. On the Warrengate Road they were: 65, 63, 38, 18, 1 and 1.
