WANGANUI COUNTY PROPOSES CONFERENCE ON STREAM FLOODING
Receiving requests from the Wanganui City Council and the Okoia branch of Federated Farmers for improvements to the Matarawa Stream and Nixon’s Creek to prevent flooding the Wanganui County Council decided yesterday to hold a special meeting to discuss the matter on Wednesday, September 20. Representatives of the Ministry of Works, the Railways i Department, the Wanganui City I Council and the Okoia branch of ' Federated Farmers will be invited to attend this meeting. In its letter, Ihe City Council stated that a petition had been received from residents of Nixon and Symons Streets and Burton Avenue, comI plaining of “the unsatisfactory conI edition of Nixon’s Creek when that i stream overflows during periods of 'heavy and continuous rainfall.’’ i The City Council requested that a ■ deputation be allowed to wait on the ‘County Council to discuss the quesjtion of diverting the flood waters and i restoring thn flow of storm water to I the Malaongaonga Stream. j The Okoia branch of Federated Farmers wanted the County Council to receive a deputation to discuss clearing the Matarawa Stream in the vicinity of Gordon Park. The branch’s letter stated that at. present willows and rubbish were blocking the stream ' where it is adjacent, to the road.
