SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs T. Russell, Wanganui, left yesterday for a week's visit to Wellington. Mrs L- Shaw, Invercargill, arrives in Wanganui today to visit, her daughter. Mrs D. M. Brown, “Scotlands,'’ Great North Road, St. John's Hill. Mrs A. 11. Breed. Oriental Bay, Wellington, is visiting her mother, Mrs Harold Jones, Kent Road, St. John’s Hill, prior to leaving next week by the Wanganella for a visit to Australia. Mrs F. G. Soper, of Highgate, Dunedin. who has been visiting "Arahina,” the Girl Guide training centre at Marton to act as director of a music and drama festival of the Girl Guides’ Association. has returned home. Five girl guides from Wanganui attended the festival.

Returning from London at the end of the year is Miss Patricia Hammond, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hammond, “Merchiston," Rata. Miss Hammond having previously gained full honours on the violin, has been persuing her vocal studies at the Royal College of Music, London. She has been abroad for about four years and has been offered her fifth year of tuition, and is returning home to New Zealand for a rest. Miss Hammond won a scholarship in New Zealand which entitled her to pursue her studies in London, which she has done with considerable distinction. She will undoubtedly prove an acquisition to musical circles in the Dominion.

An Operatic “Find.” A 20-year-old Auckland soprano Is, in the opinion of the famous tenor, Tito Schipa, the most promising by far, of more than 40 singers he auditioned during his tour of Australia and New Zealand. She is Miss Mina Foley, said to be the greatest operatic find In New Zealand since Oscar Natzka,

St. Mary’s Drama Circle. A very pleasant little gathering took place on Wednesday evening, when ■nembers of St. Mary’s Drama Circle, on completing a seven weeks course with Miss Stocker, drama tutor of the Regional Council of Adult Education, entertained her at a supper party at the Ritz. The president. Mrs R. Carew, on behalf of the circle presented Miss Stocker with a small gift and a beautiful bouquet of hyacinths of every colour, violets and freezias. Miss Stocker, in thanking the students for the function said the circle had the producers and the talent and was sure they would be able to do some good work. She added that she had enjoyed the drama course with them.

Interesting Exhibits. Visitors who attended the Y.W.C.A. Doll Exhibition yesterday were interested in Viewing several additional exhibits. One was a 61-year-old French doll with real hair and a perfect face. When wound up its mechanism made the doll cry, wave its arms and then say Mama and Papa. The doll is the property of Mrs A. F. A. Woollams. She also lent an old lady's pin cushion dated 1849 and embroidered in crossstitch. Another interesting exhibit was a miniature wine set and a number of tiny Chinese figures. These were lent by Mrs Roy Jack. The “Roya l Personage” doll in a large glass case was the centre of Interest, everyone remarking on the intricate embroidery cf beads and pearls which formed the jewels on the Royal robes. The exhibition which lias been running for three days, closed last night.
