The Unicorn Selected For Guineas At Avondale Today

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special)., —Another clash between The Unicorn 1 and Mainbrace will be the feature of the Avondale Guineas contest tomorrow, and although the majority ol , racegoers appear to have no doubt j about the ultimate result there will , be considerable interest in the first, classic of the season up this way. The Unicorn came right away from j his opponents in the open sprint last ■ Saturday and won as a high-class j three-year-old should. That he will | run out the mile under weight-for-age | conditions cannot be doubted, for he was able to beat Davey Jones in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes over seven furlongs last autumn, and that can generally be accepted as a fair test of a two-year-old’s stamina. Mainbrace may be improved by last Saturday’s race in the Sheriff Handi-1 cap, but The Unicorn should again fin- j ish ahead of him.

The Guineas is being termed a duel between The Unicorn and Mainbrace. but the form of some of the others warrants thought. Classowa may run in the sprint again, as his chances there appear bright after his third (a dead-heat with Dixie) last Saturday. Miss Kanui has won at her two appearances: this season and she may surprise. Quill, a filly by Gold Nib from a Debutant Stakes winner in Kirstymac, galloped brilliantly at Ellerslie last Tuesday to beat Superior Scholar. She is still a maiden but that effort may win her many friends. Whatever the composition of the field, an army of supporters will be content to accept a short price about the Hon. W. S. Goosman's brilliant colt, and The Unicorn should oblige.

The first four horses in last week’s Avondale Cup will appear once more in the Coronation Handicap, run over the same distance. Thus form may be repeated, although it is not often that this happens in the north. High Glory is a good galloper and a win for her will be in order after three successive seconds. She will be confronted with stiff opposition from horses , such as Florida and Lady Carmel. Count Bian, fourth last week, impressed as a probable improver. An interesting runner will be Stanfred, whose best efforts have been up ; to a mile. Frontier Mac may receive a better passage on this occasion as he is an out-in-front runner. Akbar might be improved by his race last week. Fireman, Beau Pari and Prince Regent will all help to make it an interesting struggle. Wonder Boy and Caber Fae and the veterans Conspiracy and Cowper are well enough placed if they can recover some of ’ their enthusiasm, but the issue finally : has to be left to High Glory and Frontier Mac, with Prince Regent, having more than an outside chance. | The open sprint field has better prospects for a very keen race this time. If Classowa starts here an im- i provement should carry him close to, victory. Should the track deteriorate that will suit Big Notes, who loves, the thick stuff. Rizzio was interfered with early last week and that accounted for his remaining in the ruck, so a better showing may be anticipated. King Finchall and Tudor Prince should also be in it. If Classowa runs here he might be the toughest Consulate has to beat. Fields are ot bumper dimensions in the majority of events, those in The Kindergarten, Empire and Grandstand Handicaps being reduced to the safety limit by ballot—and no right of re-entry in the event ot scratchings. In the Empire Handicap there were 46 acceptors, 19 having to be balloted out. The only scratching up to yesterday was Reliance in the Grandsiand Handicap. The going will still be on the easy side after heavy rain during the early part of the week. Horses that should give a good account of themselves include:— Kindergarten Stakes: Persian Gulf, Scorned, Te Rapa. Kingsland Hurdles: The Fake, Foxlyn, The Bat. Empire Hack Handicap: Sierra, Peter Boy, Cimtore. Coronation Handicap: High Glory. Frontier Mac, Lady Carmel. Avondale Guineas: The Unicorn, Mainbrace, Zenith. Grandstand Hack Handicap: Lone Star, Flying Gleam, Reliance. Shorts Handicap: Classowa, Consulate, Big Notes. Spring Handicap: Swift Beau, Rating, Reparation.
