UNITED STATES CALLS 70,000 CONSCRIPTS
WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 (Recd. 6 p.m.)—The Army today ordered 70,000 men to be conscripted fn November. This raised to 170,000 the number ordered to be conscripted since the outbreak of the Korean war. The Air Force and Navy do not plan an immediate call for conscripts. Both services have been building up their manpower with volunteers, and by the recall of reserves. Conscription is now Ijmited to single men aged 19 to 25, but with a goal of 3.000,000 men under arms by next June, there eis every sign that the conscription order will be broadened. A high proportion of the men examined have been rejected by the Army, and Major-General Lewis Hershey* Director of Selective Service, has* asked the Army to lower its standards. The Navy has called up 88,000 reserves. The Air Force recalled 50,000 unorganjsed reserves, plus an unspecified number of organised reserve and national guard units. The Marines have called up 50,000 unorganised reserves and an unknown number of organised reserve units. Unorganised reserves are officers and men not formed into specific reserve units.
