A CITY MEMORIAL
VY7ANGANUI is about, to make a decision on a. memorial to those W who gave their lives in World AA’ar IT. Several suggestions have been made, the bulk of them indicating that there is a large body of public opinion in favour of something useful rather than ornamental. Preservation of the sentiment underlying such :i scheme ean be achieved in the creation of something useful. It is true that some people do not like anything in the shape of public utility, except in a true, memorial sense. The Wanganui Returned Services Association appears to bo of that mind, in that it. has: expressed itself in favour of a Garden of Remembrance and a Book of Remembrance in a chapel within the garden. That has. a full sentimental value and combines a measure eof utility, in that the garden will create an atraosnhere of beauty and repose considered essential in a memorial. TA hatever is the decision of those charged with the duty of selecting a memorial, let it ho hoped that there is a full measure of unity. After World AVar I there was a rather a -sad lack of unanimity. Lot there ho unanimity in the direction of providing something iisoful to generations of today and tomorrow, and at the same time preserving to the full a true memorial sentiment.
