E xtra Pay Sought For Unloading Of Smelly Phosphate

INVERCARGILL, Yesterday. Because of the odour from cargo, waterslders unloading the Cyclope at Blutt ceased work at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The vessel is discharging 6000 tons of Gafsa phosphate from Sfax, North Africa. An Italian ship, the Cyclope arrived at Bluff on Sunday night. Before leaving Sfax the cargo was sprayed with kerosene, and this is thought to be the reason for the bad odour. The unloading of the Cyclope began about 9 a.m. yesterday and it was not long before the men complained ot feeling sick. The odour Is said to hav® affected some men to such an extent that noses began to bleed. At present the men are being paid an extra Is an hour phosphate money, but they are seeking a farther Is, making the total 6s 3d. No settlement had been reached after meeting of the Port Committee yesterday. The dispute has been referred to Wellington.
