Heavy Communist Attacks In The Region Of Taegu

TOKIO, Sept. 3 (Recd. 11 p.m.)— North Koreans smashed more than two miles from the north today to within 12 miles of the strategic centre of Taegu. As furious fighting enveloped almost the whole 120 miles Korean battle perimeter estimates of enemy forces engaged in the general offensive ranged from 90,000 to 120.000. North Koreans are still nine miles from Masan, which they are under orders to capture by today. "This is the most concentrated attack we have had since we landed in Korea on July 18,” said Major-General Hobart Gay, commander of the Ist Cavalry Division, today. He said that while one regiment of his division met a frontal attack by the North Korean 13th Division, another regiment was attacking the 15th North Korean Division to the west.
