Old Time Melodies At Wanganui Savage Club

There were a large number of visitors at the fortnightly “korero" of the Wanganui Savage Club on Saturday night. Savage Peter Swan was installed as "Great Chief” for the night, by the Rangatira, Savage A. F. Newrick. The theme of the night was "old-time tunes.” "Oft in the Stilly Night,” and "In the Gloaming” were sung by the Lyric Quartette (Savage J. Healey and Messrs. G. P. Williamson, Kendall and W. Healey). The Savage Club Glee party was heard in “Dear Hearts and Gentle People,” “OldTime Melodies," and the "Stone Outside Dan Murphy's Door.” Two sketchers were produced by Savage Roland Young—" Laughing Gas” (Savages Stenberg, Peachey and C. O'Brien), and “The Wicked Lady” (Savages Stenberg, Robertson and Peachey’. Savage J. Dent produced "The Good Girl” (Savages Dent, Goldsmid, Cornish and Kenward). Vocal soloists were Past Rangatira A. J.'W. Hodder, N. Lewis and J. D. Tizard. One of the most popular contributors to the programme was Ted Olliver’s Accordeon Band. They played several well-received items. Mr. Harold Hean, now of Wellington, entertained at short notice and was most amusing. The Wanganui Savage Club Orchestra played appropriate numbers--"Sweethearts of Yesterday,’ "Massas in the Cold, Cold Ground,” “Old Black Joe," and “My Old Kentucky Home, and the marches “Pythian," “Under the Double Eagle," ”Le Pe're de la Victoire' 'and "The Favourite Regimerit."
