Gollen Favoured For Avondale Cup Today In Very Open Race

AUCKLAND, Last Night, (Special). Easy going should be the state o£ the track tomorrow tor the opening of the Avondale spring meeting. Fields are very good all round, a feature being the presence of several of last season’s outstanding two-year-olds. The tptalisator double will be on the Avopdale Cup and the Sheriff Handicap.

The Avondale Cup presents a problem to speculators, with so many horses holding chances. Gollen, High Glory and Manon came home in that order in the mile al the recent Pakuranga Hunt meeting. The extra journey may not help this trio, although High Glory was second at Trentham over this journey. Gollen's great condition may also cany him on. Caber Fae will be all the better for his recent race, and Wonder Boy and Conspiracy always have chances if paught right on the day. Roiata and Frontier Mac won the handicays on this track in July and may be formidable contestants. Akbar has been working better than for some time past. Con Splrito likes this track and he may >yeU be the new rising handicap star, though he has to be taken pn trust over the journey. Bedivere, Fireman and the Hawke’s Bay galloper Count Bian seem the best of the lightweights. Perhaps Gpllen and Roiata will be the best. It is not often that a three-year-old wins the sprint here, but in the Sheriff Handicap the class is not so strong as formerly Outside of those of this age and so they will have their big chance, especially as the ground conditions have favoured training operations for many weeks past. Mainbrace and The Unicorn werp the best last season, with the promising lightweight Consulate an interesting runner. Classowa, Tudor Prince (if he has improved since Pakuranga), the speedy Zenith, Kintamani, and Dixie should make this second race of the double an illuminating contest. Mainbrace and Consulate are favoured. Provision has been made for divisions tn the Avondale Stakes, but the withdrawal of Akbar and Dusky Bride leaves the field only one over the safety number. Thus another defection would enable the club to avoid divisions in the first "classic” of the season for juveniles. The following should go well in their engagements tomorrow:— Henderson Handicap.—Emma Hamilton, Miss Kanui, Passionate. September Hurdles.—The Bat, Saluki, Swift View. Cornwallis Handicap—Motunacb, Cimtore, Archbishop. Avondale Cup.—Gollen, Roiata, Con Splrito. Avondale Stakes—First Division: Taj Mahal, Te Rapa. Second Division: Scorned, Foyer. Swanson Handicap.—St. Martin, Millstream, Ollivier. Sheriff Handicap.—Mainbrace, Consulate, The Unicorn. Borough Handicap—Reparation, Lord Revel, Luminous. The fields are:—

AUCKLAND, Last Night (Special). —The success of Foxfable at New Plymouth last week, his first as a jumper, confirmed the thought that he would be all right on a left-handed irgck. The hacks Flying Gleam and Heroa, also winners last Saturday at Taranaki headquarters, are engaged Jn similar class at Avondale tomorrow, and they may be able to held their own.
