LOCAL CANDIDATES PUT IN FINAL TRY-OUTS

By '“Kestrel.” With most of the visitors still to arrive, the final trials yesterday of horses engaged on the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting tomorrow were confined largely to local horses. The weather was overcast but mild and following some steady rain during the night the track was dead. The fast work was done on the No. 1 grass. Among the best workers were Davey Jones, Red Ruler and Phalamint who are engaged in the open "handicaps tomorrow, and of the few Debutant Stakes candidates worked, Skipalong and Contraband did best. and Beaumarchais. Parlous worked round to the six furlongs and came home at an even rate to complete in 1.19. Parlous failed narrowly to win the Marangai Handicap last year when Bronstar beat him by a neck and he might run well again in the same race tomorrow. The last time he ran he finished third in a sprint at Bulls on July 29. Beaumarchais was restricted to steady threequarter pace ftoijk. Davey Jones, with a light-weight in the saddle, pulled hard in his trial over five furlongs which he completed in 1.4 2-5, the last three in 40. Davey Jones was keen to increase the pace and appears to have done all right since racing at Foxton last week when he was narrowly beaten by The Laird in the Robinson Handicap. With Broughton up he will be favourite for the Flying Handicap tomorrow. Red Ruler (Chote) was too good for Polleta (McKinnon) throughout. live furlongs which they ran in 1.5. the last three in 40. Red Ruler had the upper hand throughout and finished slightly in front of Polleta. Red Ruler has yet to open his account in open company.
