The United Nations now havtj on record four American and five South Korean divisions, plus one Marine and one British brigade. These are backed by a substantial quantity of medium and heavy artillery, and at least 500 tanks.
Observers believe that another two divisions will have to be employed to break out of the Korean defence box, aided possibly by Marines built into a full division and another fresh unit for an amphibious blow which MacArthur is expected to deliver shortly. The recent South Korean landing on an island near Inchow testifies complete United Nations control of Korean waters, and the possibility of an amphibious assault when MacArthur’s forces are sufficiently built up. South Koreans, aided by American infantry, with artillery and tanks, fought off a ferocious new North Korean attack north of Pohang yesterday morning. The attack followed a report that the North Korean command was preparing to throw another division into action in a do-or-die attempt to capture the town. “The Communists hve lost their chance to capture Pohang. We will stay here now.” This confident appraisal of the situation was give n today by Lieutenant-Colonel R. Emmerich, senior American adviser to the South Korean 3rd Division. He added a warning that the situation would change fast if the North Koreans should throw in heavy reinforcements.
