N.I. Schools’ Soccer Tourney Won For First Time By Wanganui

For the first time since the competition was begun in 1932 Wanganui won the North Island Primary Schools’ Football Association tournament. The contest attracted widespread interest among primary school pupils and teachers and its success was due to successful organisation and enthusiasm among the players. Maintaining its unbeaten record, Wanganui A held off challenges from Wanganui B and Wellington yesterday. Its strong line of forwards was mainly responsible for the success and it was particularly powerful round the goal mouth. During the tourney Wanganui A scored 27 goals, 12 of which were notched by Brodie. Interest was maintained till the final whistle yeslerday afternoon. Though the Hawke’s Bay goalie held back the solid Hutt play, Hutt forced the pace to win by three goals scored by Wilson. McSloy and one off the goalie. Wanganui managed to outclass Wellington in the forward line by four goals scored by Williams (2), Brodie and Penman. Wanganui B had its win when it up-ended Taranaki Championship points.—Wanganui A 10, Hutt 8. Wellington 6, Hawke’s Bay 4, Wanganui B 2, Taranaki 0.
