Southland Defeats Otago I n Return Match

INVERCARGILL, last Night (PA), —Southland turned the tables on the result a fortnight ago to beat Otago by 11 points to 6 in a rugged and bright representative Rugby game played at Rugby Park, Invercargill, yesterday. The Southland forwards and the better handling of the backs proved too much for the former Shield holders. Southland dominated the first half to score A points (three tries, one converted, and a penalty). Though Otago fought back in the second half they never looked like really endangering Southland’s superiority. Otago's points came from a try and a penalty. L. Wilson at first five-eighth proved more than a match for the two Otago five-eighths, repeatedly breaking the defence. The result was a true showing of Southland form rather than a deterioration of the Otago play which, however, lacked the old Ming. The initiative was nearly always with the winners.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night (PA) —After finishing the first spell holding a 13-3 lead, Taranaki was fortunate to hold King Country to a 16-16 draw in a representative Rugby match played in ideal conditions at New Plymouth on Saturday. King Country scored four tries and converted two, and Taranaki scored three tries, two of which were converted, and a penalty.
