BELIEF THAT RUSSIA WOULD LIKE U.S. IN A WAR WITH CHINA

LONDON, Aug. 19 (Reed. 6 p.m.)—The “Times,” in an editorial today says: “At the very best many months must pass before the Allied forces in Korea can be strengthened and equipped to throw back the invaders, and it would be rash to expect that the Russians will allow that time to elapse without a diversion of some kind, probably still seeking to avoid war themselves, but using other forces on a fringe of then - orbit, as they did in Korea. The greatest of those forces is China. Nothing would serve the Russian interests better than if Communist China became embroiled with the United States in a war that drained American strength away .from areas of highest strategic importance in the Middle East and Europe. “It is prudent to assume that such embroilment is counted by the Kremlin as its supreme interest at the moment.”
