General Lytup’s Victory In Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup At New Plymouth Meeting

(By

“Kestrel”)

Giving a smooth exhibition of jumping and showing more pace than the opposition on the flat, General Lytup won the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup on Saturday to add the principal jumping event on the opening day of the combined hunt club’s meeting at New Plymouth to his Richard Roake Memorial Steeples win at Hastings the previous Saturday. Knob-wav -fAvnnritps in Njrnita

and Luminous won the respective “legs” of the totalisator double, the Whenuakura and Palea Handicaps, returning a short-priced dividend. Other favourites to win included Hemokai in the opening event and Speckles in the amateur riders’ race. In the latter case Gay Echo, bracketed with Speckles, finished second, the combination paying a better place dividend than straight-out backers received. Double-figure dividends were paid by Mallow in the open sprint, Treasure Fox in the Waverley Hack, r.-'.it the bracketed Nawadaha and Tokeua, winners of the respective divisions in the Wereroa Stakes. Weather conditions were ideal and the track in good winter order, with the going a trifle easy. The large crowd of patrons included many from the Wanganui distr.ct. Totalisator investments amounted to £41,234 10s, including £2997 10s on the doubles machine, an increase of £2073 over the £39,161 10s put through on the corresponding day last year. Of the 5995 ten-shilling tickets which comprised the doubles pool ll 99 were on Ngaita, 546 of them being reinvested on Luminous. Backers of this combination received a dividend of £9 2s 6d for £L After Dr. W. T. Simmons, Master of the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club, had congratulated the winners of the trophies attached of the Trial Hunters' Steeples, the Ladies’ Bracelet and the Egmont-Wanganui liw.it Cup, the trophies were presented by Mrs Lup-I ton, wif e of the pres et:’.: c th? club, J Mr D. Lupton. In the Trial Hunters Steeples was ridden by Mr M. B. Preston, s :: of the owner, Mr A. E. Preston, and the younger, holder of an amateur, rider's licence in the country. As a 1 gesture .Mr A. E. Preston donate:: the riding fee to the Jockeys’ Associ-I ation. GENERAL LYTUP EASILY General Lytup reg.stered a convincing victory in the Egmont-Wan-ganui Hunt Cup, with Betterboy second and the each-way favourite, Ercoupe, third. Aratoro and Middoon led over the stand double the first time, with Black Salve and Ercoupe next. Running down the back General Lytup joined Aratoro, and commencing the final round he led from Black Salve, with Ercoupe, Be'tterboy, Aratoro, Middoon and Master Patrick next. Ercoupe headed General Lytup six furlongs from home, the pair being three lengths ahead of Befteiboy, with a gap back to Black Salve and Master Patrick, w'ho was making up leeway. General Lytup outjumped Ercoupe near the three furlongs and drew away, and it was left to Betterboy to chase the leader home. Ercoupe held on for third, two lengths away, and Master Patrick was fourth, ahead of Middoon. Shadow King and Golden Realm were pulled up in the final round. LUMINOUS ALL THE WAY The Te Awamutu-trained Helios gelding Luminous led all the way to win the Patea Handicap from the fast-finishing Foxtavia. • As the field settled down for the run out of the straight Luminous and Brookland were disputing the lead, with Master McGrath next, followed by Bramble Leighon, Mercian Lad and Emerge, Foxtavia having been chopped back to the rear. There was little change in the leading division along the back, excel that Foxtavia' made a forward move approaching the half-mile. On the home turn Luminous was clear of Emerge, Master McGrath, Brookland, Mercian Lad and Foxtavia. The last-named finished with a strong run but failed by a length and a-half to catch Luminous. ■ Three lengths back Master McGrath. I Hostess, Emerge and Brookland were almost in line, Master McGrath get- ’ ting third money on the photo. Bramble Leighon and Mercian Lad were NGAITA WINS AGAIN Nal ras half-sister, the Felous mare Ngaita, who had won at Hastings a fortnight earlier, had an effortless win in the Whenuakura Hack Handicap, .-.nd Heroa, at a generous price, nosed Garno out of second. j Clear View missed the jump-out-and Strathconan showed out early ( from Heroa, Ngaita, General Sand, 1 Flying Gleam and Garno. At the five! ‘ Ngaita had w’orked her way into the 1 lean, being followed by Relentless, who had moved up fart, Heroa, Strath- 1 conan and Short Wave. On the home turn Relentless and Condne followed} Ngaita, and Koa Hine, Heroa and Garno were next. Ngaita ran on strongly to win by a length and a-half. Heroa came home fast for second, a nose in front of Garno, and Now Then: was fourth, ahead of Koa Hine, Con-j dine. General Sand and Relentless. ■ MALLOW DOWNS BROW N DERBY Backers had a reverse in the six-j furlong Waihou Handicap, Mallow | downing the well-backed Brown I Derby in the last 50 yards, with the] favourite, Papawhero unplaced. Francis Mond, Millie's Choice and} Taiwa were slow to move, and Brown' Derby soon showed ojjt from Mallow, i Papawhero, Sir Royal and Revel Lad J A: the half-mile Millie’s Choice, Fa-| pawhero, Mallow and Sir Royal, ai-j most in line, were in close attendance on Brown Derby, who turned fori : ome three lengths ahead of Mallow, j Mallow threw out a sustained chal-| Imge which enabled the Broietort 1 r are to beat Brown Derby by a ck. Sir Royal came home well for , t ird, a length away, and he was fol-, ' -rl by Revel Lad, Millie’s Choice, I i a Ora Katoa and Papawhero. I HEMOKAI ON HIS OWN The Waitotara-owned and trained I Hemokai was in a class above the' opposition in the Trial Hunters

Steeples and justified the strong support accorded him. I Kapai Chief and Frankie led the field over the early stages, and just after they had cleared the double Dutch Prince, at the tail of the field, came to grief at the live fence. Frankie was a clear leader at the end of a mile and was followed over the double the second time by Hemokai, Kapai Chief and Red Heart. Hemokai assumed command six furlongs from home and drew away, eventually winning by 15 lengths. Red Heart, outsider in the field of seven, beat Frankie for second place, and Kapai Chief was a fair fourth, well clear of Mike and Coridian. BRACKETED PAIR’S DUEL Speckles and Gay Echo, owned by Mr E. S. Lupton, who trains the latter but rode Speckles, had a great duel in the Ladies' Bracelet, Speckles winning on the photo. Slieve Bloom and The Limit made the early running, with Speckles and Gay Echo near the rear till the five furlongs was reached, at which stage they were moving up. Here High Tension fell, his rider having a narrow escape. Slieve Bloom led Speckles and Gay Echo into the straight and the bracketed pair then drew away, Speckles getting a nose verdict. Royal Rita finished fast to cut Blossomtime out of third money, and then came-Strategical and fatevo Bloom. WEREROA STAKES DIVISIONS Hawera trainer D. Hastings provided the winners of the respective divisions in the Wereroa Stakes, Nawadaha ajid Tokena, and as they were bracketed the dividends were belle" than expected. Grande Fille and Myron showed out smartly in the first division but intune’s Model then took over, only to he shaded by Atelio at the three, with Nawadaha, always handy, at the head of the others. Atelio was a clear -leader into the straight, but Nawadaha, under a hard ride, got the better of him in the last 50 yards to win by half a length. Three lengths back was Belle Loch, ahead of Neptune’s Model, Leighdine and Grande Fille. Leighon Queen, Sea Lion and Gay Treasure were the early leaders in the second division, but Tokena and Forest Art soon worked their way to the front and piloted Lucky Client, Gay Treasure and Solnera past the half-mile. Tokena and Forest Art led ’nto the straight and fought out the finish, Tokena prevailing by half a head. Gay Treasure was two lengths back, ahead of Foxplato and Lucky Client. W INNER FROM MORRINSVILLE Three outsiders filled the placings in the concluding event, the Waverley Hack Handicap, z the Morrinsville trained Treasure Fox winning from Condine (making his second appearance) and Obvious. The each-way favourite. Royal Spray, took over from Robin Glen at the half-mile to lead Rosearna, Twin Star, Davilshar and Condine. Treasure Fox moved up smartly crossing the top to follow Royal Spray and Robin Glen into the Straight, ahead of Condine. Treasure Fox carried on to run away from the field and win by four lengths. Condine was second, a length and a-half in front of Obvious, and then came Hutton, Davilshar and Royal Spray. Details of results: — TRIAL HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE
