COLLEGIATE SCHOOL LOSES BOTH RUGBY MATCHES AGAINST TE AUTE

PALMERSTON N., Last Night (Special).—The Wanganui Collegiate School suffered a double defeat at the hands of Te Aute College at Palmerston North On Saturday. Both the firs, and second fifteens wer e outplayed to the tune of 19 to nil and 16-3, respectively. Though not without incident, both matches lacked the sparkle of intercollegiate fixtures. Te Aute went straight on the offensive in the first fifteens’ match, and for the earlier part of the game kept Collegiate hard pressed in its own territory. Te AuV missed two opportunities for opening the scoring, however, when they failed to capitalise on penalties awarded. Collegiate missed with similar opportunities. H. Callaghan, aTe forward, set the ball rolling when he scored a try for Te Aute from a scrum in Collegiate’s 25 and forced his way through to score in a convenient position. H. Ngatai added the extra points. The score remained at 5 to nil till after half time. Five minutes after the start of the second half, Te Aute were awarded another penalty •’< Ngatai made no mistake with the kick. A few minutes later the Maoris scored a second try, when H. Tibble took possession in front of the Collegiate goal and made a break for the line and passed to R. Cookson, who went over with a Collegiate player round his neck. Ngatai converted.— 13 to nil. In the latter stages Collegiate was hard on the offensive and attacks cut deeply into Te Ante’s defence, time and again. However, the Maoris’ defence held and five minutes before time Ngatia added another three points to the team's total with a penaltv goaled from a handv position. Right on time R. Kutia scored the final try. which originated from a ruck in Wanganui’s 25. He went over in a corner. The try was not converted—Te Aute 19, Wanganui Collegiate 0.

Collegiate had a fair share of the -crums and lineouts during the first half. The hooker. G. D. Cameron, and the cantain, M. G. Glenn, nut in good work in the forwards. The back line attack was led by B. G. Hamilton at first five-eighths, who was quick to

exploit an opening and made at least two snarkling runs. R. N. Baker, a speedv winger in the Te Aute team, and the hooker. R. Morete, did splendid work, particularly in the second half, when To Auto mononolised the scrums. Cookson, on I?.e wing, was one of the best backs on the field.

SECOND FIFTEENS. The second fifteens’ match was distinguished by the play of the Te Aute winger, J. Stewart, who scored 10 of the team's 16 points. He scored and converted two tries. B. Morehu and R. Kora scored the other two tries. For Collegiate J. Giesen goaled a penalty.
