Frenchmen Will “Invade” Ancient Channel Port
RYE, SUSSEX.—The little English Port of Rye will be “invaded” next year by French “Invaders,” when the town holds its festival of Britain Celebration.
Six hundred years ago. French i aiders burned and sacked Rye. Next year, as during attacks in the Middle Ages, Church bells will be rung and beacons lighted when the “Raiders” are sighted sailing up the river Rother from Rye Harbour.
Defenders will ride into the town from neghbouring villages on horse back and in farm carts. "Guns’’ will open fire from the ruined walls of King Henry VIII’s castle at nearby chambers. And as the fleet comes near the town, the ships will also be fired at from the Ypres tower, built in the twelfth century for the defence of Rye. Rye Town Council will invite up to 100 Frenchmen to provide the attacking force, bringing their own boats and banners with them.—Reuters.
