FOUR NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Last Night (PA).—The Government has found that insufficient provision had been made in the recent appointments to the Leg slative Council to ensure the passing of its legislation and has, therefore, made four additional appointments. This was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr. Holland tonight. He added that the death ot Sir Anii-ana Ngata, which had left the Maori people without representation, and the sickness of other members, had left the Government without a working majority in the Legislative Council. It had, therefore, been decided to make the following additional appointments: Mr. J. S. Allen, farmer, Tirau; Mr. Cheviot W. D. Bell, farmer, Rangitumau; Mr. C. H. Croker, solicitor, New Plymouth; and Mr. H. T. U. Marumaru, farmer, Bulls. Mr. Marumaru Supervised Land Development Mr. H. T. U. Marumaru was born in the Parewanui district near Bulls. He was educated at the Parewanui School and later at Te Aute College. He worked on his father's farm after leaving school and later joined tho staff of the Maori Affairs Department at Wanganui, where he was employed for close on 20 years. Mr. Marumaru's chief duty with the Maori Affairs Department was organising and supervising all the land development schemes of the Aotea Land Board. He was assoeiaterl with the Morikau Farm Settlement for many years and was chiefly responsible for turning the farm from a losing proposition to a paying unit. In later years Mr. Marumaru has been closely associated with the welfare work of the department. All the time that he was employed by the department, Mr. Marumaru maintained contact with his three farms. Mr. Marumaru retired recently from the department and is now farming one of his properties at Parewanui. He was a director of the Parewanui Dairy Company before it was merged with the Rangitikei Cooperative Dairy Company. Mr. Marumaru was a member of the Wanganui County Council for nine years, being the representative of the Morikau Riding. ’ Mr. Marumaru unsuccessfully contested the Western Maori seat at tha 1546 and 1949 general elections in the interests of the National Party. He is a vice-president of the New Zealand National Party. Mr. C. H. Croker, Member Of A Legal Firm NEW PLIYMOUTH, Last Night (Spec.).— .Mr. C. H. Croker is the senior partner in the New Plymouth firm of Croker and McCormick, barristers and solicitors. He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and the Otago University, and was admitted to the Bar in 1916. He saw overseas service in the first World War and on his return In 1919 entered practice on his own account. He has practised continually at New Plymouth since then. Mr. Croker has had a long connection with the National Party organisation and as chairman of the party's New Plymouth Electorate Committee for a number of years, has been active in several elec—>n campaigns. In his younger days Mr. Croker achieved prominence as a track runner, harrier and gymnast. Re has since maintained a close interest in athletics, and is president of the New Plymouth Harrier Club and the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. He is also identified with the Taranaki Jockey Club and the Taranaki Racing Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, which he represents on the National Council of the New Zealand Association. Mr. Bell Farmed In The Waitotara Valley Mr. C. W. D. Bell is a son of the late Sir Francis Bell, P.C., a former Leader of the Legislative Council. He was educated at Christ’s College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and was for many years a member ot his father’s legal firm in Wellington. Mr. Bell served in World War One with the 10th. Royal Hussars and later with the Royal Air Force with the rank of captain. During World War Two he served with the Rc*,al New Zealand Air Force on administrative duties Until recently he was farming at Makakaho at the top of the Waitotara Valley. When he gave up this farm it was taken over by the Rehabilitation Department and recently was balloted for in Wanganui.
