No Decision Yet Whether Duncan Estate For College Playing Area
No decision on whether the whole of the Duncan Estate or the lower portion of it can be purchased for a hostel site for the new Wanganui Girls’ College can be given until the Ministry cf Works decides what part of the estate it will make available 'or the school, the Education Department informed the college’s board of governors in a Fetter received at yesterday’s meeting. The board wants the land purchased so that the whole of the proposed hostel site in Jones Street can be nade available for playing areas. Th-e board decided to forward to the ilennial conference of the New Zcaand Secondary School Boards’ Association a remit that post-primarj school boards make m staff appointments during the school term in.olving the transfer of teachers from )ther schools. Submitting this remit to the board, he assistant-secretary, Mr. K. McArtney, said district high schools had been particularly hard hit through teachers leaving in the middle of the term t"» take appointments elsewhere. Ho said the remit did not apply to relieving teachers, however. They could move when required. Principal of the college. Miss M. E. Baker, said that the application of the ruling in the remit would be hard on girls’ colleges who frequently lost staff in the middle of a term through marriage. Mr. McArtney pointed out. however, that relieving teachers could be appointed until- the end of the erm if necessary.
