Annual Meeting Of Wanganui Rose Society Held

The annual meeting of the Wanganui Rose Society was informed that arrangements are being made for the completion of the planting of roses at Durie Hill, and that a pruning demonstration will be 1 given at Durie Hill at an early date.

In his report the president, Mr. W. H. Reynolds, stated that the first rose was planted on Arbor Day with a good attendance, including the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers), town clerk, and engineer, and several councillors, also members of Women’s Institutes, school children, and representatives of other societies, and Ratepayers’ Association. The roses have made very good progress and have been greatly admired by visitors to the city. On November 10, 1949, the society held its annual rose show in conjunction with the Horticultural Society and though the weather had not been the best for roses, still a very good show was held and some \/?ry nice blooms were staged. The winner of the Glenrossie Trophy was Mrs. Strachan, Ballance Memorial Cup by Dr. Graves, of Waverley.

In November the society made its annual visit to Massey College Rose Gardens. Some 30 members made the trip and a very enjoyable day was spent among the roses. The society’s. thanks are due to Mr. Powell for his kindness in explaining the different .varieties and advice given. Like all other districts the roses had been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

The society’s thanks are also due to Mr. C. V. Holyoake, Dominion president of the National Rose Society, who so kindly paid a visit and gave members a very able resume of the work and activities of the Centre Council, also of the Rose Garden at Morrinsville, and the Rose Convention.

The report thanks all who assisted the society in the past year. The election of officers resulted: Patron, the Rev. T. A. Speer; president, Mr. W. H. Reynolds; vice-president, Mr. C. K. Richdale; honorary vicepresidentts, Mesdames Beattie, Gower, Collins, Stewart, McLeod, and C. P. Brown, Dr. P. B. Graves and Messrs. E. Stewart, G. A. Ammundsen and R. P. Earle; committee, Messrs. S.
