COLLEGIATE SCHOOL WINS RUGBY MATCH AGAINST NEW PLYMOUTH

With their backs and forwards playing excellently in both sessions of play, the first Rugby fifteen of the Wanganui Collegiate School defeated New Plymouth Boys’ High School by 13 points (two converted tries and one penalty goal) to 6 (two penalty goals), on the Wanganui ground yesterday afternoon. The weather was fine and there was a good attendance of spectators for a mid-week day. Solid forward work, spectacular side line dashes, and good combined passing rushes were features which held the crowd’s interest from start to finish. Although New Plymouth held a territorial margin in the first half, the score was against them 5-0 at half-time. Early in the second half New Plymouth reduced the points lead to 5 to 3 with a penalty, and another penalty gave them the lead, 6-5. From this out the Collegiate School forwards rose to splendid heights and subdued the High School pack. The school backs supported every movement with fine collaboration and in the last 20 minutes Collegiate added a converted try and a penalty goal to give them a winning margin of seven points. Collegiate School took the honours in the scrums and line-outs, with New Plymouth having the better of the rucks. The losers lacked the speed in the backs which has been a big contributing factor in their successes in former years. Glenn, Hare, Irwin, and Blathwaite stood out for Collegiate School in a grand pack of hard toiling forwards. In the backs both Battell and McKenzie impressed with their pace, and with the Hamilton brothers combining well in the five-eighths line, they more than held their own with their opposite numbers. The school backs gave their best showing of the season. For New Plymouth, the outstanding player was Powell, the full-back. He played tirelessly and kicked the two penalty goals for his side. Dickson (second five-eighths), was very enterprising, as was Cassidy. Ailao was the visitors’ most impressive forward and he received good support from Flavell. The respective half-backs played judicious games, making good openings for the players outside them. Collegiate School opened on a strong note. From a scrum near halfway the Collegiate backs gained possession and raced goalward. McKenzie, the centre, drew the defence cleverly and gave an overlap pass to Battell, who took the ball going at top speed, and he raced over by the posts to score. Giesen converted — Collegiate School 5, New Plymouth High 0. Shortly after Giesen was injured and was replaced by D. G. Hamilton. Robust play by High School gave the School defence a trying time and only resolute defence kept the attackers out. From defence Collegiate School swung to attack and twice went close to scoring. Twice in quick succession Dickson tried hard to penetrate for New Plymouth but each time he was lowered as he tried to break clear. Collegiate were leading 5-nil at halftime. Losing no time opening the second half, Wanganui attacked zealously and B. G. Hamilton was unfortunate in not scoring, after an opening made by Battell. Good forward play by High School forced Wanganui to their twenty-five. Here the home side was penalised and Powell goaled to make the score Wanganui 5, New Plymouth 3. Playing spiritedly High School backs gave Wanganui a buffeting, and when play was deep in Wanganui territory the home side was penalised and Powell goaled to give High School the lead, 6-5. The ebb and flow of play was exciting, and Glenn regained the lead for Wanganui when he goaled from a penalty. Then Wanganui unwound the most spectacular movement of the day, when their forwards raced goalward with the ball passing from Hare, to Baker, to B. G. Hamilton, who drew two men and sent Cameron over for a try by the posts. Glenn converted—Wanganui 13, High School 6. This was the final score to an exciting game. Teams were:— Wanganui: R. G.
