SERVICEMEN FARMERS TAKE EXCEPTION TO COMMENTS BY MR. O’SHEA

A protest against th e reported statement ox the general secretary of Federated Farmers (Mr A. P. O’Shea’ that land policy of the R.S.A. was shameful, was made at a meeting of j ex-servicemen farmers held last night by the Wanganui Returned Services’ i Association. ■ The motion stated: “When Britain was up against it during the war, a ■ policy of land conscription was impos- , ed on all who were not farming then land to the best advantage, and we feel strongly that with an urgent need I for farms and an increase in producition, it is both economically and morally wrong that some people should control large areas anj not farm them efficiently. When these people I fail to negotiate with returned men, [the right and proper course is tor [them to be displaced by compulsion." J Moving the motion, Mr. T. Guthrie i said Mr. O’Shea was sadly out of step . with the majority of practical farm- ’ ers on this question. He suggested I that the R.S.A. should advocate the Government to intn-'uce a policy of vigorously and fe 1 .sly acquirin'* badl ' farmed land and so achieve the double purpose of sett r ng returned men and increasing production. I ded’eated to Wesley’s memory. I “England is a nice country to visit I for a holiday, but give me New Zea- . land ever time to reside in,” con- ' eluded Mr. Tremain.
