CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

Marked enthusiasm was the keynote of the annual meeting of the Taihape Caledonian Society, held on Thurday evening. The president, A, C. A. Stewart, presided over a satisfactory attendance. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, the latter disclosing a slight loss on the year's working. The election of oliicers for the ensuing year resulted as follow: Patron, Mr. W. McCombie; chief, Mr. C. A. Stewart; chieftains, Messrs L. Cooke, F. Howie, R. D. Macßae, R. Anderson, A. McCalman; hon. secretary, Mrs. R. Better (pro tern); ho n auditor, Mr. E. Reece; ladies' committee, Mesdames Jensen, Stewart, Patrick, Newton, Broome, ...McCalman, Cooke, and Miss Howie; mens committee, Messrs F. Bruce, C. Jensen, D. Broome, R. Cross, J. Baird, R. Treadwell, A. C. Joblin and J. Dick. The chairman congratulated Mrs. Patrick and Mr. R. Anderson on the success gained by their daughters in Caledonian dancing competitions and added that the excellent results achieved were due in no small measure to the teaching of Mrs. Roydhouse (better known as Jessie Dick). It was decided to hold the annua! national dancing competitions, and Mr. J. Dick offered to donate a challenge cup for the open class. The offer was gratefully accepted. Mr. Dick said that he had attended many dancing competitions, but he had never seen any more efficiently conducted than those held at Taihape. The secretary urged the meeting to retain the same date as last year for the competitions. Mrs. L. Patrick said that during her visits to other centres several enquiries had been made regarding the next Taihape competitions, and it was evident that last year’s event was very popular. Everybody seemed to be well satisfied, she said. The meeting decided’ to hold an Ingleside in July and the programme was left in the hands of Mr. J. Dick to arrange. He said that he could obtain a boy entertainer for the occasion. An exhibition of children’s dancing will be included i n the programme. The matter of appointing a delegate to the centre was discussed and the matter was left in the hands of Mr. Dick to make inquiries. BICYCLE SMASHED BY TRUCK Parked in the right-of-way of a building in Tui Street, Taihape, on Friday afternoon, a bicycle belonging to a postal employee was smashed by a truck as it was reversing and damaged beyond repair. PERSONAL. Mr. E. R. Green, of Stratford, has been transferred to the Taihape railway staff to replace Mr. E. J. Storey, who will go to Stratford this week. Mr. D. W. Underhill, of the Taihape railway staff, has received notice of his transfer to Opua (North Auckland). He will be replaced by Mr. D. G. Bayliss, of Whangarei. Mr F. Newmarch, of the Magistrates Court staff. Wellington, has been appointed registrar of the Taihape Magistrate's Court and commences his new duties on June 26. Mr T. J. Sharkey, who has been acting as registrar at Taihape since the departure of Mr E. L. Egarr, is due back in Palmerston North on June 23-
