MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

Despite the increase of 2s 3d per bag in the retail price of coke in Marton as a result of the council raising its charges to the local merchants by £2 a ton, sales have not fallen off, judging by the remarks made by the manager of the gasworks, Mr. A. A. Watson, to the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday. The manager said that local dealers were still taking full quotas. Enquiries for coke had even been received from as far as Lower Hutt and Wanganui. Acting on the suggestion of Cr. Mogridge, the council decided to approach the Rangitikei Catchment Board again pointing out the urgent, need for a plan to clear debris in the Tutaenui stream, a legacy of the February flood. Cr. Mogridge said that trees had been lodged in many places along the stream bed and would be a source of danger if further flooding occurred. A suggestion that the council appoint a ranger to deal with stray dogs in the town was made by Cr. Meads. He said that after his words of war on dogs soon after his election to the council, it was noticeable that the streets were kept free. However, lately dogs had re-appeared and were a source of annoyance. Owners should keep the dogs from roaming the streets, otherwise they should be destroyed, said Cr. Meads. “Some amusement was caused when the clerk read a letter from a resident in Follett Street complaining of the flood waters from Marton Park entering his property, washing away top soil. “His Worship informed me last time the park was flooded that it was an ‘act of God.’ I am sufficiently a Godfearing man not to bear any malice, I but would appreciate it if the council would assist in rectifying the trouble,” wrote the ratepayer. : The Mayor: Shall we hand this on | to the Works Committee? Cr. Meads: It is on too high a level for us. The Works Committee is going to look into the complaint. Permission was granted the Rangitikei Hunt Club to hold the annual ball in the Civic Theatre on Thursday July 27. It was decided to purchase a quantity of new crockery for the Civic Iheatre supper room.
