Boys' And Girls' Agricultural Clubs Reports And Results

WANGANUI-MAIN TRUNK DIVISION

Following is the annual report and results of the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club competitions Wanganui-Main Trunk Di- . vision) to be presented to the ] annual meeting' of delegates on ; Friday, June 30, at 3.30 p.m. ; PLOTS.

Fifty-one schools took part in the garden competitions and 565 plots were inspected by judges during the months of February, March and April. The season proved a good one and many of the local judges reported that a high standard of work had been reached by the youthful competitors. This competition seems to be well established, pupils understand requirements and good progress is made from year to year. School and group shows were again a feature of the work. At Ohakune, Taihape, Hunterville, Kaitoke and Alton, comprehensive displays were staged and the exhibits evoked much interest in the districts concerned. Such efforts form a fitting finale to the season's work and are worthy of encouragement. It is possible to record the progress made, because of the efforts of the local judges in the various school districts and because of the interest and initiative shown by the group committees in the various centres. The executive committee desires to place on record its deep appreciation of the efforts of. those people in developing the Boys’ and Girls’ Club work in this Division. ANIMAL PROJECTS. Thirty-eight schools took part in these competitions and 665 animals were paraded before the judges during the months of November and December. Once .again there was an increase in the numbers of senior animals presented and the interest shown augurs well for the continued development of the movement. Group championships meetings were held at Whenuakura and Ohakune. These competitions evoke a wide interest but are possible only where a number of competing schools are situated reasonably close together. Owing to the scattered nature of much ot the district, transport of animals to the centres would be too costly except in a few localities. Judging was undertaken by well qualified gentlemen drawn from various sources. It is pleasing to record that several of those acting this year are ex-members of calf clubs in the Wanganui and Taranaki Education Boards. I

The thanks of the executive committee are extended to the following who acted during the year:— Messrs. H. D. Brewster, Feilding; p. C. Wills, Manutahi; Q. Hicks, Mokoia;' M. Scown, Manutahi; A. Garnett, Alton; C. Griffin, Inaha; R. Humphreys, Whangaehu; M. J. Saywell, Otakelio; L. Thorburn, Castlecliff; C. J. Masters, Wanganui; L. Lancaster, Palmerston North; R. V. Brown, Wanganui. Badges of achievement and excellence were provided for those who qualified and a special certificate for those leaving school with six or more years service in the club, was instituted. Seventeen pupils qualified for the certificate award. Various organisations in the district made grants to the funds of the clubs. This practical support, given so freely, is a potent factor in the development of the work and the thanks of all concerned in the movement are extended to the undermentioned contributing bodies:— Wanganui A. & P. Association; Rangitikei County Council; Federated Farmers, Waverley; Federated Farmers, Marton; Federated Farmers, Okoia; Federated Farmers, Waimarino; Dairy Co., Okoia; Dairy Co Whangaehu; Dairy Co., *RangitikeiBulls; Dairy Co., Raetihi. In bringing this report to a close we desire to place on record our appreciation of the efforts of the district committees in various centres, of the supervisors at the various schools and of the teachers in the schools for the practical help and encouragement given the children. The spirit of cooperation amongst the people in the various school districts assists the development of the work throughout the division. fLOT KESI'LTS, ISW. WANGANUI-MAIN TRUNK DIVISION.
