ENGLAND’S RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM BEATS N.S.W. IN REMARKABLE GAME
SYDNEY, June 4 (Recd. 6 p.m.)— A Rugby League match between England and New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which resulted in a win for England by 20 to 13, was a remarkable game in many respects. It was played before a record crowd of 70,413. Though the vast crowd was on its toes continually from the start, neither line was crossed until only 17 minutes of play remained. Then England scored four tries in quick succession, and Troy, of New South Wales, dived across in a corner after the final bell had sounded. The first half was one of bright tactics by both sides and infringements by England, who despite a feast of the ball, could do little against fast New South Wales interception. The New South Wales winger, N. Ridding, rattled on three penalties in the first half and another early in the second against two by the English captain, E. Ward. England’s right winger, R. Pollard, suffered a dislocated collarbone and did not resume after the interval. A few minutes after the start of the second half the New South Wales captain and centre three-quarter, left the field with a sprained ankle. The New South Wales collapse appeared to start from then. For England, J. Hilton scored two tries, and Ward and E. Ashcroft one each. Ward converted two. The New South Wales try was converted by Pidding, making the final score England 20, New South Wales 13.
