A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

Arrangements in connection with the annual ball of the Rangitikei A. and P. Association to be held on June 7 were advanced a furtner stage at a meeting of the general committee on Friday evening, when the president, Mr. J. H. Marshall, presided over a satisfactory attendance. It was decided to purchase tablecloths for the supper room. Certain details regarding the supper were discussed and promises of two turkeys, two geese, seven fowls, and two lambs, a supply of cream and milk were received, together with an offer to provide fuel for the range at the Town Hall supper-room. The following ball committee was appointed: Messrs. J. Marshall (chairman), D. L. Broome, A. J. Kelly, A. J. Mickleson, J. O. C. Anderson, Robt. Gordon, and A. R. Fannin. HOSPITAL BOARD REPRESENTATION. The Taihape Chamber of Commerce has written to the Taihape Borough Council asking the council to make representations to the Government that representation on the Wanganui Hospital Board should be altered so that the Taihape Borough Council would be combined with the northern ridings of the Rangitikei County and the Marton Borough Council combined w’ith the southern ridings of the county for representation purposes. The letter was considered at Tuesday’s meeting of the council, and it was decided to act as suggested by the chamber. WAR MEMORIAL. Disappointment with the result of the War Memorial appeal was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, at Tuesday's meeting of the Taihape Borough Council. The town clerk reported that £lOlO had been collected to date. The Mayor said he was very disappointed with the result, especially in regard to the total of the contributions in the borough. It was hoped to raise £lOOO in the town area, but there appeared to be no hope of this objective being reached, he said. “If a circus or a rodeo came here they take away £4OO to £5OO in one night, but if we ask the town to raise £lOOO for a war memorial the.*requircd amount is not forthcoming. It is most disappointing. The matter will have to be considered at a special i meeting of the War Memorial Committee to be held shortly. In my opinion those who have contributed to the appeal should have the biggest say regarding the memorial,” concluded the Mayor. TAIHAPE-NAPIER ROAD. A letter from the Taihape Chamber of mCommerce, urging support for the chamber's representations that the Taihape-Napier road be declared a main highway was received by the Taihape Borough Council on Tuesday evening. The chamber requested the council to write to the Main Highways Board with this end in view. Members of the council remembered that the Hawke’s Bay Countv Council was evidently in favour of the proposal, but the Rangitikei County Council was opposed to the TaihapeNanier road being declared a main highway. The council resolved to support the Chamber of Commerce in the matter. ONLY SIX MONTHS TO GO. “The Borough Council has only six more months of its term to serve and a lot of work remains to be done. Street improvements are under way; the water mains have to be relined, and other necessary work has to be carried out. We must do our best for the borough before our term expires,” remarked the Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening. IMPROVEMENTS TO MATAROA ROAD. “The Main Highways Board is going to cut expenses, and we should solicit the support of all interested bodies in regard to the urgency of improvements to Mataroa Road and should point out to the Main Highway Board that the road is deteriorating rapidly and should be declared a main highway,” remarked Cr. A. Gregory at the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Tuesday. He moved that representations should be made to the Main Highways Board along the lines suggested. The motion was carried. SPEED LIMIT NOT OBSERVED “It’s a wonder to me we have not had an accident on Kiwi Road beloiv. The speed limit is certainly not ob- ' served. Cars also encroach on the footpath watting to pass another car coming in the opposite direction. It is high time something was done to provide a suitable footpath in Kiwi Road,” remarked Cr. Emery, at Tuesdays Borough Council meeting. He moved that the attention of the traffic inspector and Automobile Association bb drawn to the matter of speeding on this road. Cr. Ireland said that some motorists tried to bpat others to the bridge. They had no brains, he said, and added ‘‘a serious accident will occur on this road sooner or later.” Cr. Emery’s motion was carried. LIMIT BAG OF DECKS SHOT. Though sportsmen generally fared badly at the opening of the shooting season last Saturday, there were a few exceptions. Two well-known enthusiasts, “S.W.K.” and “F.J.l.’’ shooting in the Rangaiwaea district, brought back 19 ducks. “K.” shot the limit of ten, while ‘‘l." was only one behind. The dog also played its part in retrieving the ducks. PIROHAHSING NEW ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES. If a person is contemplating new electrical appliances and desires an increased electricity quota he should apply to the Borough Council for an increase in his allocation before purchasing the appliances and each case will be considered on ns merits,” remarked Cr. Ashenden, who said that the basis of the allocation was the 1948 consumption. In 1949 an increase of 4 per cent, was added. Cr. Ashenden pointed out that it was illegal to install a heater without a permit, though this was sometimes done.. COLLECTION AT GYMKHANA. A collection taken at the Rangitikei Pony Club’s gymkhana at Winiata on Tuesday totalled £25. Satisfaction at the generous support of the public was expressed by Mr. W. R. Duncan, commissioner.
