Government Provides Rail Transport Of Hay For Northern Farmers

WELLINGTON. Last Night (PAI All rail transport charges over £1 are to be paid by the Government for the carriage of hay purchased by farmers in the Far North who suffered in the recent drought. This decision was announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Holyoako, at lhe conclusion of a Cabinet meeting tonight. The Minister said farmers in the Far North had had to feed out hay which had boon saved for winter use. Tn help them replenish their supplies of winter fodder the Government would assist them with purchases of hay. quite substantial quantities of which were obtainable in the middle and southern portions of the North Island. The cost of paying all rail freights after the first £1 was estimated to involve about £6OOO.
