FIVE JOCKEYS INJURED AT TAURANGA RACES

AUCKLAND. April 23, (PA).—Five jockeys were injured, one seriously, in accidents at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Tauranga on Saturday. Four of them were admitted to the Tauranga Hospital. Three of the riders were injured in the last race, the Maunganui Hack Handicap. They are: T. W. Green, aged 42, several fractured ribs and a fractured collarbone. His condition is not serious. B. Noble, apprentice: Shock, discharged after treatment. L. G. Osborne: Shock, discharged after treatment. In this race Noble was riding Rolata, one of the three leading horses. Entering the straight Ro’iata veered toward the outside of the track, slipped and brought down Foxtavia (ridden by Green) and Con Spirito (ridden by Osborne). Serious injuries were suffered by J. Grylls, aged 14, apprentice jockey, when Tamarakau, Ihe horse he was riding in the Hairini Hack Handicap, slipped and threw him. Grylls received a fractured skull, concussion and severe lacerations. He was admitted to the Tauranga hospital, where his condition is serious. The fifth jockey was A. C. Robinson, rider of Sir Sidney, which fell in the Kaimai Hack Hurdles and had to be destroyed. He suffered slight concussion but was not admitted to hospital.
