VALUES AT FEUDING SALE WERE STRONGER THAN ANTICIPATED

PALMERSTON N., Last Night <PA)—The autumn cattle fair at Feilding attracted an entry of 1600 cattle and a large attendance. Values were inclined to be a little stronger than anticipated. In view of the availability of cattle and the splendid feed position, apart from a few pens of grown cattle much interest was displayed in some very choice weaner steers and heifers. There was some comment on the fact that the weaner heifers were traded for immediate processing as vealers. Many graziers felt that such female cattle should be held for breeding, and that it was a mistake to slaughter such stock.

Fat sheep were in very short supply, but. prices did not mark any rise on late rates.

Store sheep sold steadily with most interest centred on ewe lambs, which sold up to the record price of 59s 2d. The inquiry for station cattle was better than expected, but prices, although slightly stronger, we*e on the conservative side and generally «n keeping with the quality of the grown cattle available. There ‘were few good pens, including some big framed Here-ford-Shorthorn-cross steers, and forward Aberdeen Angus. A line of 37 A. A. bullocks realised £lB 7s 6d, which was the top price. Big framed Hereford-cross bullocks were passed in at a figure short of £l9. Young cattle sold steadily, and weaner types of very good quality, flpade a ready sale at up to £lO 15s for steers, and £9 7s for good heifers. Run cows (empty) with some condition, made to £lO 10s. Weaner dairy heifers were in demand in the dairy section, where a modest, yarding of medium quality mature cattle sold o n a strong note. Springing cows, £ll 10s to £l6: springing heifers, £l2 15s to £l7 10s; cows in milk, £ll to £lB ss; weaner heifers, £2 to £9 ss.

Considerable trading was done in boner cal lie, which were available in large numbers.

Those anticipating a good supply of mutton were disappointed when greeted with a yarding of just qver 100 head of fat sheen. Considering the quality, prices were firm, but heavy wethers were again neglected. Sales were: Maiden ewes 50s lOd,

wethers to 54s 10d, lambs to 46s Id. An offering of 3600 store sheep found buyers rather keenly interested in store wethers and ewe lambs, while the tone for wether lambs was easier. A fop line of ewe lambs from Massey College sold at 59s 2d. a record price for a yard sale. For 2-tooth wethers the best price was 495.
