Girls College Roll. The roll at the Wanganui Girls’ College numbers 546, stated Miss M. E. Baker, lady principal, to the board of Governors’ meeting yesterday. Of this total 113 are boarders.

Railways Consignments. The Railways Department advises that during the Easter holiday period the through booking of goods and parcels consigned from the North Island to South Island by sea and air will be curtailed. The service will be curtailed also on Anzac Day.

Freezing Worker Injured While working on the chain at Imlay Freezing Works yesterday, Mr P. Schreiber, of 164 Bell Street, received a knife cut on the right hand. He was taken to the Wanganui Hospital by ambulance.

Drinking Beer. Competition in beer drinking has increased in intensity. A correspondent signing himself “Old Nick’’ has advised that he will drink 15 handles m three minutes next Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m.

Help From R.S.A. The Wanganui Returned Services’ Association gave financial assistance to between three and five ex-servicemen or their widows during the past 12 months, said the secretary (Mr. E. Barnett) at the quarterly meeting of the Wanganui R.S.A.

Fxctory-Hand Injured. Injuries which necessitated his removal to the Wanganui Hospital were received by Mr. Walter Scott, of 20 Mahoney Street, lyanganui East, when working a crane at the Sash and Door Timber Company’s factory, Ridgway Street on Wednesday afternoon. Last night his condition was reported as improving.

Tennis Competitions The Wanganui Club was successful in winning the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s inter-club A grade competition for this season. The B and C grade competitions have been abandoned because of wet weather cancelling a number’ of rounds. These rounds could not be played at the end of the season as clubs have their own events to finalise and other commitments

Rewi Alley Fund. The pupils of the Wanganui Girls’ College made a donation of 15 5s to the Rewi Alley fund in China last month. This was reported at the monthly meeting of the board of Governors of the school, held yesterday. At the recent day of prayer a collection for the distressed people in Europe was taken up and yielded 13 3s, which has been handed to Mrs. C. R. White.

Easter Rugby Matches. The annual Rugby match between Oriental (Wellington) and Kaierau will be played on Spriggens Park on Easter Saturday. The Pirate senior team will journey to Hawera at Easter to take part in the annual Pirate Rugby tournament Between Pirates teams in Hawera, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Napier. The annual Spillane Cup tournament for Marist Rugby Clubs has been postponed this year.

Young Girt Injured. A severe gash to the right hand was suffered yesterday morning by a young girl, Karen Spooner, aged two years, whose parents reside at 17 Caius Avenue. Shortly before 8 p.m., the young girl, carying a bottle in a hand, ran down the hall-way. She tripped and fell over and received a gash to her right hand from the broken glass. She was taken to the Waganui Hospital by ambulance. Last night her condition was reported as good.

Private Enterprise. “For the past 15 years we have been growing up so we are called a welfafe state in New Jcaland and we now have generations rising who do not know the meaning of private enterprise,’’ said Mr. H. E. Schofield, of Matamata, addressing the Associated Chambers of Commerce yesterday after his election as president for 1950-51. The responsibility, he added, was on chamber members to show that principles of private enterprise were worth fighting for.

Delegates To Conference. A decision to hold a general meeting in sufficient time to discuss remits to the annual Dominion conference and that delegates to the conference should be elected at the annual meeting was made at the quarterly meeting of the Wanganui Returned Services’ Association. Speaking to the motion, Mr. R. Herbert said that one of the reasons why more interest was not taken in association meetings was the mandatory appointment of members of the executive as delegates to the Dominion conference. Head-on Collision. A heavy truck driven by Mr. A. Whatmough, of Wanganui, was involved in a head-on collision with a light truck driven by Mr. J. Whiu, of Sparrow Cliff, on Anzac Parade shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. The heavy truck was proceeding in the direction of tjie Dublin Street bridge and the collision occurred on the river side of the road on the city side of Helmore Street. Mr. Whiu suffered a gashed head. He was taken to the Wanganui Hospital by ambulance and after receiving treatment was sent home. Visit Of Orchestra. The Alex Lindsay String Orchestra will visit Wanganui next month to present a concert in the Opera House. The orchestra is well known for its fine ensemble playing and is often referred to as the “Boyd Neal Orchestra of New Zealand.’’ A good deal of interest is being taken in the appearance of these players because, apart from visits of the National Orchestra, I Wanganui has had little opportunity jof hearing orchestral music for a number of years. The forthcoming Iconcert is being sponsored by the I Wanganui Branch of the British Music Society.
