MAN CHARGED WITH WOUNDING WITH AN INTENT TO KILL
MELBOURNE, Feb. 7 (Recd. 8.45 p.m.)—A labourer aged 27, was charged and remanded today with wounding John Gilligan with intent to kill. The man, Frederick William Harrison, was one of six persons, including two women, who were arrested after gun-point raids by detectives on two suburban flats. Another man was charged with being found in possession of a pistol. Gilligan, who received a bullet in an arm when his car was riddled with sub-machinegun bullets, is in hospital. In Sydney and Melbourne a big increase has been noted in the number of firms using armoured cars to carry their payrolls. Some Sydney payroll escorts are being issued with shotguns in addition to revolvers because of the use of sub-machineguns in the recent attempt on the payroll at Morts Dock. It is claimed that shotguns are easier to use than sub-machineguns and would be equally effective against gangsters.
